Parenting advice, study tips and everything in between!
If each child is unique, why do they all get taught in the same way?
Children learn in different ways, and the four basic learning styles are visual, auditory, reading and writing, and kinaesthetic. Parents can identify their child’s learning style by observing how the child reads, expresses themselves and solves problems, then adapt study methods to suit, such as diagrams for visual learners or hands-on activities with breaks for kinaesthetic learners.
How to encourage your apathetic child
To encourage an apathetic child, praise effort rather than marks, treat mistakes as learning opportunities and give them real choices. Set manageable short and long-term goals, teach time management and agree on a written commitment plan with goals, study times and celebrations. Apathy can stem from fear of failure, low self-esteem, learning problems or too little challenge.
Why you should teach your child mindfulness
Teaching children mindfulness helps them notice their thoughts, feelings and body sensations in the present moment, which research links to better emotion regulation and decision-making. Parents can practise it with children by naming what they notice, counting breaths together and taking mindful walks, building 5 to 10 minutes into daily routines such as car rides or bedtime.
What if my child is average?
An academically average child is completely okay, as most people live ordinary, happy lives. Be honest about whether your expectations are realistic, support your child calmly after reports, celebrate small improvements, avoid comparisons with siblings or peers and encourage their unique interests, because high pressure can cause anxiety and fear of failure.
How can I help my child with their school work at home?
Parents can help with schoolwork at home by setting a non-negotiable routine for lunch, relaxation and homework, providing a quiet study space and guiding with instructions rather than giving answers. Ask your child to explain what they learnt, limit screen time to one or two hours a day, ensure 8 to 10 hours of sleep and praise small achievements.
