The Ultimate Exam Study App!

Written by Adrian Marnewick

Did you know what an “app” was before December 2009?

Unlikely, because the Apple iPad only launched a month later in January 2010. It’s been 7 years since that iconic piece of tech candy hit the shelves, and our lives have never been the same since.

From personal budgeting to tracking the number of calories you consume each day, you’re bound to find an app for almost anything you can think of. There are useful apps (the kind I like), and addictive gaming apps (the kind my 13 year old son loves). But what we’re really interested in is helping our children achieve excellent exam results, right?

According to data from Google, there are currently over 200,000 educational apps available in the Android App Store. The Apple App Store comes in lower at over 100,000 educational apps. These are approximate figures, but one thing is for sure – with over 300,000 educational apps to choose from, which is best suited for your child?

Questions that South African parents should ask when thinking about downloading a free or paid app are:

  • Is the content of the app based on the South African school curriculum?
  • Is the app customised for South African children? For example, I wouldn’t want my child to get into the habit of spelling “colour” the American way, “color”.
  • Does the app use loads of data?
  • How much time will my child need to spend in the app to see any kind of improvement in results?
Fortunately for South African parents, there is an educational app available that checks all the right boxes. Launched in 2014 and quickly becoming one of the most talked about learning tools, WorksheetCloud is a South African designed and developed app that helps children in primary and high school prepare for tests and exams through online and printable worksheets.

Primary School Worksheets

The company behind WorksheetCloud, Learning Lab Apps, doesn’t reveal the number of subscribers using the app. However WorksheetCloud as a brand has over 100,000 followers on Facebook and has a partnership with MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet to give all MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet cardholders a discount on WorksheetCloud membership. The app also won the Western Cape Premier’s Entrepreneurship Award as “the best emerging business in the Western Cape”.

And parents are raving. The app has received a 4.5 out of 5 star rating by customers who describe WorksheetCloud as one of the best ways to prepare your child for school exams.

The premise of the app is simple: your child works through CAPS-based online worksheets that are automatically marked by the app, and your child receives instant feedback in the form of hints, tips and explanations to help them learn. For more traditional learners, the app also gives the option of printing out each worksheet with a marking memorandum to complete on paper.

Interactive Online Worksheets South Africa

WorksheetCloud covers subjects like maths, science, history, geography, and languages. All subjects are covered in both English and Afrikaans. The app works on any internet enabled device (think computer desktop, tablet and smartphone) and can be accessed via your web browser without needing to download anything.

Parents can pay for a WorksheetCloud membership on a monthly or annual basis, with the annual option giving you up to 3 months free. Pricing starts at R60 per learner per month with access to all available subjects, with a once-off sign up fee of R120.

      Hi Marlene

      Thanks for your message.

When it comes to Maths, especially for the lower grades, it is important to let your child practice using and working with the different concepts/strategies. Maths is very abstract, and only through practice do children learn to bridge between concrete (5 actual apples) and the abstract numbers (5 shown on a page).

WorksheetCloud is an online resource that gives you access to interactive and printable worksheets to help your child revise and practise for class tests and exams. All the worksheets are based on the South African CAPS curriculum which means that they are 100% relevant to the work your child is doing in class.

We also include detailed memorandums that include the answers and model explanations and working-out for each and every question.

Hi Sabelo, thanks for your comment! I hear you… I have a suggestion that you could maybe try to help your son with his Mathematics.

When you make use of these worksheets, my suggestion would be to first start helping by completing an open book worksheet (doing the worksheet with their school books next to them, which they can refer to for answers), then you can mark their work together. This will help them to draw connections from the work in their textbook to the written answers they gives. Marking it together will help build their confidence and they will feel supported (try to make a big deal of the answers they got correct).

Then they should complete the worksheet again, but this time with no books and no help. Once completed they can either mark it alone, or you can mark it together again. Maybe make it a bit of a competition, where for every correct answer they get 5 minutes of T.V time (or any activity he loves). Incentives work like a charm! This will help to pinpoint the specific areas of that topic that require further study. Talk with them about the questions they got wrong and look for the correct answers or explanations in his school books. They can then read through the work again and then attempt the worksheet a third time.

All three attempts don’t have to be done in one day, you can spread them out, depending on his concentration ability and extra mural responsibilities. Going over the work, with guidance from you and his books, will help a lot.

WorksheetCloud also provides interactive online worksheets that are very easy to follow and fun to do. Each worksheet that you do contains 6 questions; this means that your child doesn’t have to concentrate for long periods at a time. When they do a worksheet they can complete the 6 questions, take a break, and then continue doing the worksheets again. This allows the child to be able to focus just a little bit at a time so that they don’t feel frustrated or frazzled by the amount of questions.

In addition to all of the above, you can also take a look at some of our blog posts covering ‘how to motivate your child to keep studying/trying’, you can find them here:

      Thanks for your message.

Grade 8 can be a big change from the level of work expected, as compared to Grade 7, which often requires a period of adjustment.

To assist your grandson with his English Home Language content, you may want to provide him with ways to practice what he learns in class – as well as how to apply that information and knowledge when answering questions.

      Hi Sachin

      Thanks for your message.

Maths difficulties, even just not having grasped the previous years work adequately enough, can be a huge frustration. Being able to manipulate and interpret the abstract world of Maths can be quite a challenge, especially if there are some gaps in the foundation knowledge.

A good place to start would be to practice the work you do in class. Repetition of the content, along with helpful guidance and explanation, can improve your understanding and strengthen your use of the various strategies and formulas. The more you practice the work, the easier it becomes.

A great source for practice worksheets and exams is WorksheetCloud.
